About us

Brain Bank Singapore

The Brain Bank Singapore is a joint partnership between Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and the National Healthcare Group (NHG), that was initiated in 2018. Our main purpose is to collect post-mortem human brain tissues via a donor scheme and preserve them optimally for use in ethics committee-approved scientific research studies.

Our Principles

To educate the public about brain degenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Stroke, Motor Neuron Disease and multiple sclerosis, amongst others;

To convey to the public, accurately and concisely, the importance of scientific studies on neurological conditions;

To ensure that all human brain tissues are treated respectfully for non-commercial use in research studies.

To ensure the fair and justifiable use of human brain tissues for scientists across Singapore.

Human Tissue Bank

The Brain Bank Singapore is located at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Novena Campus) where the facility is equipped to receive, process and store brain tissues using various preservation techniques, before they are sent out to researchers for ethics committee-approved studies.

We are registered as a Human Tissue Bank regulated by the Human Biomedical Research Act (HBRA) and Human Tissue Framework (HTF) of the Ministry of Health (MOH). Our study protocol is also approved by SingHealth Centralised Institutional Review Board (CIRB), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Institutional Review Board (IRB) and NHG Domain Specific Review Board (DSRB).
